The first meeting for a program to improve the ÂÌñÉç economy and community is drawing a lot of interest according to one of its organizers. The initial meeting for ÂÌñÉç’s segment of the Hometown Competitiveness program will be at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 12, at City Hall in downtown ÂÌñÉç. It is open to the public.

About 90 students from Dawes County’s elementary schools participated in Science Day at ÂÌñÉç State College on Monday. In addition to participating in hands-on science activities created and administered by ÂÌñÉç State College teacher education students, the children listened to presentations by David Nieves of Bellevue, a children’s book author who travels far and wide to study reptiles and amphibians.

Fifteen men were inducted into Blue Key National Honor Society at ÂÌñÉç State College. Membership in Blue Key is based on leadership, scholarship and character, and is regarded as one of the highest honors a male student at ÂÌñÉç State can attain.

Children’s book author David M. Nieves of Bellevue will be speaking at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 11 in the Sandoz Center at ÂÌñÉç State College. The program will be open to the public without cost. Nieves also will be working with ÂÌñÉç elementary students during the day on Monday.

Forty-three students are candidates for the annual Winter Magic Formal royalty competition at ÂÌñÉç State College this week. CSC's clubs and organizations have nominated 23 women and 20 men who are juniors or seniors. The king, queen and their court are being chosen by a vote of the student body which began Monday and ends Friday. The winners will be announced during Saturday night’s dance in the Student Center.
